We speak your language
Whether you’re a subcontractor having tax taken off every payment or a contractor paying a team, the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) adds paperwork and deadlines. We take care of it, make sure you claim every allowable cost, and get back any tax you’ve overpaid.
We work with joiners, builders, electricians, plumbers, plasterers, roofers, decorators, handymen and building firms, both limited companies and sole traders.
What’s included
- Year-end accounts and tax return
- CIS deduction statements checked and reconciled

CIS explained
Common questions from tradespeople
How much CIS tax is taken off my payments?
Contractors deduct 20% from the labour part of your invoices if you’re registered for CIS, or 30% if you’re not. With gross payment status, nothing is deducted. Materials should not have CIS taken off.
How do I get my CIS refund?
As a sole trader, the CIS deducted is set against your tax bill in your Self Assessment return, and any overpayment is refunded by HMRC. As a limited company, deductions are offset against the company’s PAYE through payroll. We handle both.
I pay subcontractors. What do I need to do?
You need to verify each subcontractor with HMRC, make the right deductions and file a CIS return every month by the 19th, even if you paid nobody that month. Late returns bring automatic penalties. We can file these for you.
What is the VAT domestic reverse charge?
Since March 2021, most building work supplied between VAT-registered businesses in the CIS uses the reverse charge: the customer accounts for the VAT instead of you charging it. It changes how you invoice and fill in your VAT return. We’ll make sure you get it right.
Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?
It depends on your profits, how you’re paid and your plans. We’ll run the numbers for both and explain the difference in plain English.

Paid monthly by Direct Debit. Prices assume you keep your records up to date in your own accounting software (for example Xero), which you pay for directly. VAT returns, payroll, CIS returns and bookkeeping are available as add-ons. Disbursements, such as Companies House filing fees, are charged in addition.
Work outside your package, such as catch-up bookkeeping, an HMRC enquiry or one-off advice, is priced and agreed with you before any work starts. No surprise bills.
